Step 1
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Add the cubed butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.

Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently.

Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut out circles using a biscuit cutter.

Place the shortcakes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake the shortcakes for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

While the shortcakes are baking, combine the sliced strawberries and sugar in a mixing bowl.

In a separate mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
Step 12
To assemble the strawberry shortcakes, split the shortcakes in half.
Step 13
Top each shortcake with a spoonful of the strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream.
Step 14
Place the other half of the shortcake on top and add more strawberries and whipped cream.
